My
left arm has suffered a lot over the years, and this injury was quite
painful at the time. I can barely see the slightly discoloured skin
now, but the mishap is still quite fresh in my mind, it was almost as
if it had happened last week.
It was 1999, and once again I was spending Xmas with my father
at Bathurst, with his second wife Chris. I was cooking lunch for myself
in the microwave (one of those packet Continental Rices that I'm so
fond of). The microwave in this kitchen is located above the oven, and
one has to reach up a bit for it (well I do, seeing I'm a little on the
short side). I went to pull it out of the microwave, and somehow had
dislodged the lid, collecting a blast of steam along my left arm. My
instant reactions, naturally, were to swear and drop the rice all over
the floor simultaneously.
At first it wasn't so
bad, but a few days later when I was back on the Central Coast, the
wound had taken a little turn for the worst (I wont go into graphic
detail, but it was kind of messy), and I had to call into Woy Woy
hospital and get it treated on the way home. Conveniently the
hospital was only just up the road from where I lived in Winifred Avenue.
I was given these large, framed, oval shaped glad wrap like dressings
to cover the affected area. Putting them on was okay, but seeing I am
very hairy, taking them off was extremely painful!
It was a bad time to get the injury. In a little over a week's time, I had to go up for my brother's wedding in Tamworth. Thankfully, the suit covered the injury up!
