I
don't know too much about my time there, except for the fact that it
was my first home, and I had a nasty fall down the stairs which chipped
and jarred some of my teeth. I don't even have too many photographs of
the place either. For those who don't know, Wyangala Dam is a small
community, about a thirty minute drive from Cowra in the state's south-west. It has a country club, a golf course and apparently it's a good
place for fishing. My parents lived there for a couple of years, until
my father accepted a
transfer to teach at Tamworth. He had a choice of three places, the
other two were Armidale and Inverell. I doubt I'll ever find out why he
chose Tamworth. This picture shows me with my mum's folks in front of the first house I ever lived in, way back in 1969.
When I visited my father in Bathurst during 1997, he took me for a drive back to Cowra and Wyangala Dam, and showed me around the area. The house was still standing, along with a number of dormitory buildings where the workers used to stay whilst the dam was being constructed. He told me of the day I was born, how he followed the ambulance that was carrying mum into Cowra. I was pretty impatient – mum was hardly out of the ambulance when I arrived.
